The Man from Kulaly Island
3 march 2025
A new film by the Presidential Television and Radio Complex of Kazakhstan will tell the story of an extraordinary man — Petr Lupenkov, the head of the meteorological station on Kulaly Island in the Caspian Sea.
Viewers will witness his daily routine — collecting data every three hours, issuing storm warnings for aviation and maritime vessels, and sending regular weather reports. However, the main story is not just about professionalism. Petr Lupenkov shares his experiences of life in complete isolation, the tough years of the 1990s when the station was nearly destroyed, and the years of survival when the only food was fish and game caught from the sea and land.
