Known as the fatherland of apples, Alma-Ata was famous for its fragrant aport variety. Each autumn, apple harvesting became a large-scale effort involving students, schoolchildren, and city residents, who picked the fruit by hand on mountain slopes and sorted the harvest under the open sky.
