Silage in Almaty Region: Livestock Feed Preparation in the 1970s

6 june 1978

In the 1970s, the preparation of silage — one of the main types of livestock feed — was actively carried out in the Almaty Region. Silage is grass dried to 50–55% moisture and stored in airtight containers, used to feed cattle and sheep. This process was an important part of agricultural production, providing animals with necessary nutrition during the winter season. Silage was mainly prepared from valuable but difficult-to-ensile leguminous grasses and legume-cereal mixtures, allowing for high-quality feed. The preparation of silage required coordinated work of mechanizers, agronomists, and veterinarians, contributing to the development of agriculture in the region.
