#Denis Ten

Denis Yuryevich Ten (June 13, 1993, Almaty — July 19, 2018, Almaty) was a Kazakhstani figure skater, competing in singles. He was an Honored Master of Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He won the bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. He was a silver medalist at the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships, a bronze medalist at the 2015 World Championships, the winner of the 2015 Four Continents Championship, the champion of the VII Winter Asian Games, a multiple winner of various international tournaments under the ISU, and a five-time champion of Kazakhstan.

Denis Ten was known for his original program choreography, particularly when the free skate was a continuation of the short program. Experts noted the high level of skating skills demonstrated by the Kazakh figure skater. According to Ten, he tried to combine the best elements from leading figure skaters without losing his individuality. Throughout his career, he worked with Russian and North American coaches, and collaborated with Swiss skater Stéphane Lambiel for his program choreographies.

Ten began figure skating in 1999. After winning a Junior Grand Prix event in 2008, he became the first figure skater from Kazakhstan to win a medal at an ISU tournament. At the age of 16, Ten represented Kazakhstan at the 2010 Winter Olympics, becoming the youngest male competitor in the event. In 2013, he won Kazakhstan’s first-ever World Championship medal in figure skating. A year later, he became the first skater from independent Kazakhstan to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. In 2015, he became the first winner of the ISU Championship, winning gold at the Four Continents Championship.

He participated in charity events. Since 2013, he produced the ice show “Denis Ten and Friends,” featuring world-class figure skaters. According to official data from the organizers, more than 500 tourists from abroad (mainly from Japan) attend the ice show each year. For his achievements and contributions to the development of sports, he received several awards, including state honors.

Denis Ten passed away on July 19, 2018, in Almaty after an attack by robbers. A monument was erected in his memory in Almaty, and a tournament was named after him.
