Almaty is a city of republican significance. It is located in the north of the Tien Shan Mountains, on the slopes of the Zailiysky Alatau, in the southeast of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The territory of the city is 682 square kilometers. The former capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan (until 1997). Almaty is the largest city and region of Kazakhstan in terms of population: as of October 2023, the population reached 2,211,198 people.
